🎓 Understand this tool
What it is
An estimator for Canadian net pay: federal and provincial income tax withheld from each paycheque, plus the CPP or QPP contribution, the EI premium, and QPIP in Quebec.
How it works
It follows the CRA’s T4127 payroll formulas using the annualized method — the same Option 1 approach payroll software uses. Pay is projected across the year, the enhanced CPP portion is deducted from income rather than credited, federal and provincial rate tables are applied less the basic personal amounts, and Quebec residents receive the federal abatement. Contributions stop at their annual ceilings, with the second CPP ceiling applied above the first.
Getting the most from it
- Choose the province so its rate table and credits load from the verified pack.
- Enter gross pay per period and pay frequency.
- Add pre-tax deductions such as RRSP contributions or union dues.
- Enter earnings so far this year so the CPP and EI ceilings land correctly.
- Compare the result against CRA’s Payroll Deductions Online Calculator, linked beneath it.
Reading your result
Late in the year the deductions can drop noticeably — that is CPP and EI hitting their annual maximums, not an error. The federal and provincial lines are separate because they are computed from separate rate tables with separate credits.
What it can't tell you
It applies the basic personal amounts only. Extra TD1 credits, pension adjustments, taxable benefits, commission income, and employer plan deductions all change real withholding. It covers provinces whose packs are verified; CRA’s calculator remains the official reference.
Frequently asked questions
The CRA publishes payroll formulas in T4127. The annualized method used here projects your pay across the year, applies federal and provincial rate tables less personal-amount credits, and converts the result back to a per-period figure — alongside CPP or QPP contributions and EI premiums, each with its own annual ceiling.
